We had just come back from a basketball tournament in Brantford, and as I was tucking my kids into bed on Sunday night I asked my son what his favourite part of the tournament was.
He answered with his top five:
- The pillow fight with his teammates in our hotel room
- Swimming in the pool with his teammates
- The team dinner at the local wing place with the palladium arcade
- Chilling in the hotel room with his buddies while everyone played on their devices and talked and ate junk food
- And….. oh yeah, the basketball games

What We Think As Parents:
Sometimes we parents think that winning the big games, all-star awards, and the sport itself is what makes the rep tournament experience so much fun for our children. We get upset for our kids when they lose or have a tough game.
The Reality:
The reality for them is that it is so much more than a game–it’s the total experience they love.
So if your team just lost every game in the tournament like mine just did, remember the bonding, the friendship, the fun is what they will remember in the long term, not how many points they lost by or how terribly they played.
Enjoy the journey and be a part of the amazing memories that sports will bring to your kids.
