This is a blog within a blog, all about the failures that line the path to success.
I told my kids I wanted to write a book about all the life lessons I had learned from playing basketball.
I am a woman of my word, so I did it. I have compiled 101 stories from the staff at Elite Camps, and from CEOs, pro players, university players, parents of players, and young athletes themselves. I have written my book, Life is a Sport: How Basketball Can Help Your Kid Succeed in Life, to help parents and athletes navigate the basketball journey. Life Is A Sport chronicles how the good, the bad, the ugly, and amazing experiences our children have in sports can better prepare them to be successful in life. I want to share my message with all the sports parents and coaches of the world to support their journey!
I like to live my message—that Life is a Sport—so I always try to explain to my own kids how participation in sports can help us succeed.
So, how did I live my message for them? I did it by making sure they saw me working and noting my progress at every step of the way. They saw me write down my goal of completing two stories a day and charting my progress with stickies.
They saw me complete two stories a day. They saw me find 101 inspirational basketball quotes, one quote to place at the beginning of every story, just like I told them I would do. They saw me work through the editing phase as I tried to make sure that each story captured the experience of the person who told it to me. They heard me talk about these incredible stories. They saw how long the entire process took. And now they will see me complete the self-publishing phase and attempt to find an agent and publisher.
I have explained to my kids that writing a book is like training to make a university team. An athlete has to train for years and put in all the behind-the-scenes work to become good enough, and an author has to have the same kind of dedication and work ethic. Getting published and becoming a New York Times best seller is, for an author, pretty much like what winning the National Championships or being drafted to the NBA is for an athlete.
My kids understand all that.
So now, after a year of writing, the book is in the final stages of editing.
Watch me as I chronicle my path to the New York Times Best- Seller list. Follow my journey as I use the life lessons learned through sport to help me navigate the good, the bad, the ugly, and the amazing realities of the publishing world and beat the odds to achieve my goal.
