Slurpees After Practice – A Beloved Sport Memory

Slurpee

SlurpeeSlurpees after Practice

Do you remember those really tough practices?

The long ones, with an endless amount of drills, suicides, and 17s, where your coach was riding everyone the whole time. You would be so tired and drained by the time it was over that you didn’t even bother changing out of your sweaty shorts and tank. You would just towel off and walk to the front doors of the gym where your mom was waiting.

I remember not being allowed to sit in the car unless I covered the leather seats with the towels she had brought because she didn’t want the seats to get stinky. So, my teammates and I would spread out the towels and buckle up and off she drove.

Before we had even gone a block I would always ask if we could stop for Slurpees. It was always my first question after a practice. And, more often than not she would say yes.

We would stop at the local 7/11 and walk right over to the Slurpee machine. We would get the biggest cups we could find and filled them up to the brim and grabbed those straws that have the spoon on the end. We would always fill them up a bit too much, so I would take my first sip right then and there so that it wouldn’t spill before I got to the counter to pay for it.

Let me tell you, I remember that when that sugary liquid hit my tongue it was pure heaven. In that moment it seemed like nothing else in the world had ever tasted so good.

Now that is a sport memory I will never forget.
